ERN's Eye Disease Information Guides
These conditions are responsible for most loss of sight in the western world and developed countries. In the world as a whole, Cataract is the major cause of blindness and is more prevalent in developing countries. AMD , Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinitis Pigmentosa affect the retina. Retinitis Pigmentosa destroys the photoreceptor cells of the retina; the cells that intitiate vision by detecting the light entering the eye. Diabetic Retinopathy  and AMD damage vast patches of retina. Glaucoma  destroys the nerve cells that connect the photoreceptor cells to the brain. Cataract is a clouding or opacity forming in the lens of the eye. The lens of the eye allows you to focus on near or far objects, like the lens of a camera.

For obtaining information on other eye diseases and conditions, the Eye Research Network highly recommends the:

Eye Diseases section of the Karolinska Institutet Library "Diseases, Disorders and Related Topics" internet resources index. (Sweden)
and the Association of Vision Science Librarians "Eye Resourses on the Internet" index.

Eye Research Facilities World Wide

The Eye Research Network started at Virginia Tech in 1995 by Dr. Mitton in Blacksburg Va, the first community in the USA to be completely wired to the internet. Currently Dr. Mitton is still in research and is now an Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences in the Eye Research Insitute of Oakland University, Rochester Michigan. Dr. Mitton elucidated the general structure of the human FIZ1 gene and currently runs an NIH funded project to learn more about the function of the FIZ1 protein in neural development, using the neural retina as the developmental model. Information on Dr. Mitton's lab may be found here: Mitton Lab, Control of Gene Expression.
